A silver chain is where most men start with jewellery, and it is also where they most often overpay or under-buy. The questions that matter are practical ones: how many grams, how wide, 925 or 999, and what a fair price looks like once the silver rate and making charges are added up. This guide answers each with numbers, and adds the Indian specifics, from BIS hallmarking to monsoon tarnish, that most chain guides leave out.
Is a silver chain good for men?
Yes. A 925 sterling silver chain is durable enough for daily wear, suits almost every skin tone and outfit, and costs a fraction of a gold chain of the same size. Its drawbacks are that it tarnishes over time and is softer than gold, so fine silver chains stretch and kink sooner.
| Factor | 925 silver chain | 22K or 18K gold chain |
|---|---|---|
| Cost for the same weight | Low | Many times higher |
| Hardness | Softer; choose 3 mm and wider for daily wear | Harder, especially 18K |
| Upkeep | Tarnishes; needs occasional polishing | Minimal |
| Look | Bright white metal | Yellow, rose or white |
| Resale value | Low, mostly metal value | Higher, tied to the gold rate |
For a man who wants a substantial chain without tying up a large sum, silver is the sensible choice. If you want the long-term metal value of gold, see our comparison of solid gold and sterling silver.
How many grams should a men's silver chain be?
For everyday wear, 15 to 30 grams at 20 to 22 inches suits most men. Weight, width and link style are linked: the same 20 grams makes a 4 to 5 mm curb chain, a narrower rope chain, or a wider but hollow Cuban.
The table is an approximate guide for a solid curb or Cuban chain at 20 to 22 inches (51 to 56 cm). Denser styles such as box, rope and wheat weigh more for their width; hollow chains weigh far less.
| Weight | Approximate width | How it looks | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 g | 2.5 to 3.5 mm | Fine, discreet | Office wear, slim builds, light pendants |
| 20 g | 4 to 5 mm | Clearly visible, everyday | Most men, most pendants |
| 30 g | 5 to 6 mm | Bold but wearable daily | Broader builds, worn alone |
| 50 g | 6 to 8 mm | Heavy statement chain | Chain-only looks, large frames |
| 80 g and above | 8 mm and wider | Very heavy | Occasional statement wear |
If you plan to hang a pendant, add the pendant's weight to the picture. A heavy pendant on a 10 gram chain pulls the chain into a V and wears the links near the bail. Our guide to types of chains for men explains which link styles carry a pendant best.
925 vs 999 silver: which is better for a chain?
925 sterling silver is better for a chain. It is 92.5 per cent silver and 7.5 per cent other metals, usually copper, which hardens it enough for links to hold their shape. 999 fine silver is 99.9 per cent pure and very soft: thin links stretch, flatten and snap with daily wear.
| Grade | Silver content | Suitable for chains? |
|---|---|---|
| 999 fine silver | 99.9% | No; too soft for fine links |
| 970 | 97.0% | Rarely; still soft |
| 925 sterling | 92.5% | Yes; the standard for chains |
| 800 | 80.0% | Occasionally; harder, less bright |
Under the revised Indian standard IS 2112:2025, BIS recognises seven silver purity grades for hallmarking: 800, 835, 925, 958, 970, 990 and 999, according to the government's announcement of HUID-based silver hallmarking. For a men's chain, 925 is the grade to look for.
How is the price of a silver chain worked out?
A silver chain's price is its silver content at the day's rate, plus making charges, plus 3 per cent GST. Because the silver rate moves daily, a chain of the same weight costs different amounts from one week to the next, which is why this guide gives the method rather than a fixed price.
- Start with the chain's gross weight in grams, for example 20 g.
- Work out the fine silver in it: 20 g of 925 silver contains 18.5 g of pure silver (20 × 0.925).
- Multiply by the day's fine silver rate per gram, or multiply the full 20 g by the jeweller's 925 rate if they quote one.
- Add making charges, quoted either per gram or as a percentage of the metal value.
- Add GST of 3 per cent, the rate for articles of precious-metal jewellery under heading 7113 in CBIC Notification No. 9/2025-Integrated Tax (Rate), charged on the full price including making. Our explainer on GST on jewellery in India shows how it appears on the bill.
Making charges are where prices differ most. A simple machine-made cable chain carries a low charge; a hand-finished franco, rope or wheat chain carries a much higher one. Ask for an itemised bill that shows weight, rate, making and GST separately. For why finished 925 jewellery costs noticeably more than the metal alone, see our explainer on why 925 silver jewellery costs more.
How to check a silver chain before you buy
A good silver chain has a clear purity mark, soldered links and a clasp that shuts firmly. Check these in the shop or as soon as the parcel arrives.
- Find the 925 stamp, usually on the clasp or on a small tag beside it.
- If the chain is BIS hallmarked, look for the three marks under IS 2112:2025: the BIS mark with the word SILVER, the purity grade and a six-character HUID code. You can verify a HUID in the BIS Care app.
- Check that the clasp is a lobster clasp for chains over about 15 grams; spring rings are weaker.
- Run the chain through your fingers for kinks, flattened links or gaps in soldered joints, especially near the clasp.
- Weigh it, or ask for the weight on the bill. A chain that feels light for its width is probably hollow.
Silver hallmarking in India is voluntary at the time of writing, unlike gold, so plenty of genuine silver is sold without a BIS hallmark. A hallmark with HUID simply gives you independent confirmation of purity.
Best silver chain styles for men
Curb, Cuban, box, franco and rope are the most dependable silver chain styles for men, because their links are dense enough to resist stretching in a softer metal.
| Style | Best width in silver | Strength | Good with a pendant |
|---|---|---|---|
| Curb | 3 to 6 mm | High | Yes |
| Cuban | 4 to 8 mm | Very high | Yes, if the bail fits |
| Box | 2 to 4 mm | High | Very good |
| Franco | 3 to 5 mm | Very high | Very good |
| Rope | 3 to 5 mm | Medium to high | Good |
| Snake | 2 to 3 mm | Low to medium | Light pendants only |
For length, 20 to 22 inches suits most men on its own, and 22 to 24 inches with a pendant. Our men's chain length guide has the full chart in inches and centimetres.
Tarnish, sweat and the shower question
Silver tarnishes when it reacts with sulphur compounds in the air, sweat and some cosmetics, forming a dark film. Indian heat and humidity speed this up, so a chain worn daily through the monsoon will darken faster than one worn in dry weather.
- Wear it often: skin contact and light friction keep the links bright.
- Remove it before swimming, since chlorine accelerates tarnish.
- Keep perfume, deodorant and hair products off the chain.
- Wipe it with a soft cloth after heavy sweating, and dry it if it gets wet.
- Store it in an airtight pouch or zip bag, laid flat to avoid kinks.
Tarnish is a surface film, not damage, and a silver polishing cloth removes most of it.
Choosing a silver chain for a pendant
For a silver chain that will carry a pendant, go one step sturdier than you would for a chain worn alone. A light pendant under about 5 grams sits well on a 2 to 3 mm box or curb chain; a heavier silver or stone-set pendant needs a solid wheat, franco or box chain of 3 to 4 mm.
Two things are easy to overlook. The chain must pass through the pendant's bail, clasp included, and the chain's metal should match the pendant, since a yellow-toned chain beside a white silver pendant usually looks accidental. Most men wear a pendant chain at 22 to 24 inches so the pendant sits on the upper chest.
How AXIOM approaches this
AXIOM works almost entirely in 925 sterling silver, most pieces set with diamonds, and its catalogue is pendant-led rather than a range of plain chains. The Sentinel Pendant, for example, is 925 sterling silver with natural black diamonds, from ₹35,200 at the time of writing. You can see every design with its exact metal and stones in our pendants and chains category.
The takeaway
Buy 925 sterling silver, not 999. Aim for a solid chain of 15 to 30 grams at 20 to 22 inches, pick a dense link style such as curb, box or franco, insist on a lobster clasp, and ask for a bill that separates weight, rate, making and GST. Wipe it after sweaty days, and it will stay bright for years.
