The short answer

Diamond bangles for a bride are bangles or a kada set with real natural or lab-grown diamonds, usually in 14K or 18K gold, worn beside the family's ritual bangles, not instead of them. Many brides choose a pair they can keep wearing: 2 to 5 mm wide, in Indian sizes 2.4 to 2.8 (57.2 to 63.5 mm across).

For many brides, the bangles that carry the most meaning are not diamond at all. They are the chooda from her maternal uncle, the shakha and pola, the green glass of a Maharashtrian wedding, or the family's gold bangles. Diamond bangles sit beside those pieces, never in place of them, and they are often the one part of the bridal set she keeps wearing every day afterwards. This guide covers how to plan a pair around family custom, size them correctly in Indian bangle sizes, and choose a design and gold that survive daily life.

How do diamond bangles sit beside ritual bridal bangles?

Ritual bangles come first and are usually given by family; diamond bangles are worn alongside them, before, after or around them, as the family's custom allows. The traditions vary widely, and within each one families differ.

Tradition Customary bridal bangles Notes
Punjabi and many North Indian families Chooda, a set of red and white bangles, often with kalire Customarily given by the maternal uncle and aunt, and traditionally worn for a period after the wedding
Bengali and Odia Shakha (white conch shell) and pola (red coral), with a loha The loha is an iron bangle, often covered with gold
Maharashtrian Hirva chuda, green glass bangles, usually in odd numbers Put on around the haldi; how long they are kept on varies by family, from about a month to a year
Gujarati Chudlo, traditionally ivory, now usually plastic Customarily gifted by the maternal uncle, often in red and green

These details follow the encyclopaedia entry on the chura, which notes, for example, that Bengali and Odia brides wear the shakha and pola with a gold-covered loha. Practice differs between families in every community, so ask the elders which bangles are customary, who gives them, how long they are worn, and whether anything should sit next to them.

A common way to combine them is a pair of slim diamond bangles at either end of a chooda stack, or diamond bangles on the wrist that does not carry the ritual set. After the ritual period, the diamond pair becomes her everyday bangles.

Which diamond bangle designs suit a bride?

For a bride who wants to keep wearing them, the most useful designs are a slim eternity bangle, a pair of bangles set of 2, or a diamond kada with an opening. Statement bangles suit the wedding day; slim ones suit the next ten years.

Design Width Diamond work Best for
Eternity bangle 2 to 3 mm One line of round stones of about 1.5 to 2.5 mm, all round or on the top half Daily wear, stacking with ritual bangles
Single diamond bangle with a motif 2 to 4 mm band, motif up to about 12 mm A cluster, flower or pear motif at the top A single statement on one wrist
Bangles set of 2 3 to 5 mm each Matching pavé or channel lines Bookending a chooda, or one on each wrist
Diamond kada for women 6 to 12 mm Pavé, baguettes or a pattern across the face Wedding and festive wear
Openable oval bangle 3 to 8 mm Stones on the top half only Office and daily wear; the stones stay on top

For daily wear, keep the stones low. Channel, bezel and low claw settings snag less on clothing and take knocks better than tall claws. A half-set bangle, with diamonds only across the top, protects the stones from desks and keyboards and costs less, because there are fewer stones.

What size diamond bangle do you need?

Indian bangle sizes are written 2.2, 2.4, 2.6 and so on, where the second number counts sixteenths of an inch of inner diameter, and most adult women fall between 2.4 and 2.8. Indian jewellers stock 2.4, 2.6 and 2.8 as the standard adult range, but measure rather than assume.

Indian size Inner diameter, inches Inner diameter, mm Inner circumference, mm
2.2 2.125 54.0 169.6
2.4 2.250 57.2 179.5
2.6 2.375 60.3 189.5
2.8 2.500 63.5 199.5
2.10 2.625 66.7 209.5
2.12 2.750 69.9 219.4

The millimetres are the exact conversion of the sixteenth-of-an-inch notation, and they match published Indian jewellers' charts. That is why 2.8 is followed by 2.10, not 2.9.

How to measure for a solid bangle:

  1. Bring the fingers together and fold the thumb in towards the little finger, as you would to slide a bangle on.
  2. Wrap a strip of paper around the widest part of the hand, across the knuckles, without squeezing.
  3. Measure the strip in mm and find the closest inner circumference in the table.
  4. If you fall between two sizes, choose the larger one.

The most accurate method is to measure, edge to edge, the inside of a bangle she already wears comfortably. Our kada size guide explains the same notation in more depth.

Openable or solid: which is better for diamond bangles?

An openable bangle is sized to the wrist and can be oval, so it fits closer and keeps the diamonds on top; a solid bangle must pass over the hand, so it sits looser but has no clasp to fail.

Question Openable (hinged) Solid (slip-on)
Sized to The wrist The widest part of the hand
Fit Close, often oval Looser; turns on the wrist
Diamonds Stay on top Turn to the underside unless set all round
Security Depends on the clasp; ask for a screw or box clasp with a safety catch Nothing to open
Best for Wide knuckles, slim wrists, daily office wear Eternity lines, stacking with ritual bangles

If her knuckles are much broader than her wrist, a solid bangle that passes the hand will slide around a lot on the wrist, and an openable oval is the more comfortable choice. Henna and heat can make hands swell slightly on the wedding day, so do not size a solid bangle tight.

Real diamonds or American diamond?

Real diamond bangles are set with natural or laboratory-grown diamond; American diamond is cubic zirconia, a simulant that is softer and can yellow over time. Polki is natural diamond left uncut, and kundan is a setting technique, so both are different looks from faceted diamond bangles.

There is nothing wrong with imitation bangles worn knowingly for a function. Pay diamond prices only for diamond, and get the material named on the invoice.

Natural or lab-grown diamond bangles?

Both are real diamonds that look identical once set; lab-grown stones cost much less per carat, and natural stones keep a little more resale value. India's diamond terminology standard, IS 19469:2025, says the word "diamond" alone may refer only to a natural diamond, and any lab-grown stone must be described as a "laboratory-grown diamond".

Question Natural diamonds Laboratory-grown diamonds
Real diamond? Yes Yes
Price for the same bangle Higher Usually much lower
Grading Full grades from GIA and IGI IGI gives full grades; GIA now gives "Premium" or "Standard"
Resale Limited Very limited

Lab-grown stones are a sensible way to afford a full eternity line or a set of 2. Some families prefer natural stones for wedding pieces; it is easier to discuss before the design is fixed. Neither should be bought as an investment.

14K, 18K or 22K gold for diamond bangles?

14K gold (58.5% pure, hallmarked 585) is the toughest choice for bangles worn every day, 18K (75%, hallmarked 750) has a richer colour and still holds stones well, and 22K (91.6%, hallmarked 916) is too soft for diamond settings on a piece that knocks against things all day. A bangle takes more impact than almost any other piece of jewellery.

If the diamond bangles will be worn next to the family's 22K gold bangles, ask to see 18K and 14K yellow side by side with them, because both are a little paler. Our comparison of 14K and 18K gold sets out the trade-offs, and every piece should carry a BIS hallmark with a six-character HUID.

What do real diamond bangles cost?

A diamond bangle is priced as gold weight times the day's gold rate, plus the diamonds by carat and type, plus making charges and 3% GST. At the time of writing, one Indian laboratory-grown diamond jeweller listed a slim 14K bangle, 39 round stones, with this breakdown on its product page:

Component Amount listed
14K gold, 3.45 g ₹38,108
Laboratory-grown diamonds, 39 stones, 0.85 ct ₹30,600
Making charges ₹10,696
Tax ₹2,382
Total ₹81,786

The tax line is 3% of the three lines above it. With natural diamonds of the same weight, the diamond line would be several times larger, and a pair doubles everything. Gold rates move daily, so use this as a guide to how the price is built and ask each jeweller for the same itemised lines.

How to brief a jeweller for diamond bangles

Give the jeweller the custom, the wrist and the daily life, not only a photograph.

  1. The ritual bangles she will wear and how the diamond pair should sit with them.
  2. Two to four reference images, with what you like in each.
  3. Single bangle, set of 2, or kada; openable or solid.
  4. Her size: the hand measurement for solid, the wrist for openable, or a bangle that fits.
  5. Width in mm, and whether the diamonds go all round or across the top.
  6. Diamonds: natural or laboratory-grown, stone size and shape.
  7. Metal: 14K or 18K, and the gold colour to match her other bangles.
  8. How she will wear them after the wedding: office, travel, every day.
  9. A budget range and the date of the first function.

Diamond-set bangles are hard to resize, much like an eternity ring, so approve the size with a paper template before anything is made. If the bangles are part of a larger commission, our guide to custom bridal jewellery sets covers planning the whole set.

How AXIOM approaches this

AXIOM's ready range includes men's kadas and bracelets, and women's bangles are made as bespoke commissions, on their own or as part of a bridal set, in 14K or 18K gold at the Bharat Diamond Bourse in Mumbai. We start from any reference you bring and from the bangles the family will give, share several design options, show the design on a model before it is made, and choose the diamonds with you, natural or lab-grown. For a wedding between November and February, start early, because the Diwali weeks are our busiest, and confirm timing through our contact page.

The practical takeaway

Plan diamond bangles around the family's ritual bangles, not the other way round. For daily wear, choose a pair 2 to 5 mm wide with low settings in 14K or 18K gold, get the size from a measured hand or a bangle that fits, choose openable if her knuckles are wide, and make sure the invoice names the diamonds plainly.

Questions people ask

What size bangle does an Indian bride usually wear?

Most adult women in India fall between sizes 2.4 and 2.8, an inner diameter of 57.2 to 63.5 mm, which is why jewellers stock those sizes, but hands vary. Measure around the widest part of the hand with the thumb tucked in, or measure the inside of a bangle that already fits, and choose the next size up if you fall between two.

Should diamond bangles be openable or solid?

Choose openable, with a hinge and a screw or box clasp, if the knuckles are much wider than the wrist or you want a close, oval fit that keeps the diamonds on top. Choose solid for a slim, continuous line of stones and nothing to come undone. Both work for daily wear.

Are diamond bangles good for daily use?

Yes, if they are slim and low. A bangle 2 to 5 mm wide with diamonds in a channel or low claws, in 14K or 18K gold, suits daily wear. Avoid tall settings and stones on the underside, which knock against desks and keyboards, and have the setting checked once a year.

How much do real diamond bangles cost in India?

The price is the gold weight times the day's rate, plus diamonds by carat and type, making charges and 3% GST. At the time of writing, one Indian jeweller listed a 14K lab-grown diamond bangle with 0.85 carat of diamonds and 3.45 g of gold at about ₹81,800. Natural diamonds cost several times more per carat.

Can diamond bangles be worn with a chooda or shakha-pola?

Yes. Many brides wear a pair of diamond bangles on either side of the chooda, or on the other wrist from the shakha-pola, so the ritual bangles stay central. Ask the family first, because customs on what is worn beside ritual bangles vary.

Can a diamond bangle be resized?

A plain section of an openable bangle can sometimes be adjusted slightly, but a bangle set with diamonds all the way round usually cannot be resized without resetting stones. Get the size right before it is made, using a paper template or a bangle that already fits.
