Choosing a custom engagement ring is less about drawing skill than about decisions made in the right order. Indian buyers now have three routes: online ring builders, chain showrooms that adapt their designs, and independent makers who design from a blank page. This guide covers the engagement-specific questions those makers rarely answer on their own pages. How do you brief a surprise ring? Where does the money go? How long should you allow before the proposal? What should you get in writing before you pay anything?
What counts as a custom engagement ring?
A custom engagement ring is one made to order to your choices, but the word covers three different services. Knowing which one you are buying tells you how much design freedom you will get.
| Route | What you choose | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Online ring builder | A setting from a menu, a stone from a list, metal and size | Buyers who want a classic solitaire and a quick decision |
| Modified design | An existing design with changes to stone, metal, width or engraving | Buyers who have found something close and want it adjusted |
| Bespoke design | Everything, starting from an idea, an occasion or a reference photo | Buyers who want a ring that exists nowhere else |
The terms are used loosely in India, and our explainer on bespoke vs custom jewellery sets out the differences. For an engagement ring, the practical test is simple: ask the maker whether you will see a sketch and a CAD render of your ring before anything is cast.
Can I design my own engagement ring online?
Yes, within limits. Online builders let you combine a preset setting with a stone and a metal, which works well for a solitaire, halo or three-stone ring. They cannot handle a shape that is not in the menu, a family motif or a stone you already own. For those, you need a maker who models the ring in CAD from your brief. Our guide to how to design your own ring in India covers the free tools and how to turn reference images into a usable brief.
How the custom engagement ring process works
Most makers follow the same six stages, and only the first two need much of your time. Everything after design approval is bench work.
- Brief. You share the stone you want, the style, the metal, the size and reference photos.
- Sketch and stone selection. The maker proposes a direction and, for a centre stone, shows you options with their grading reports.
- CAD render. A 3D model shows the ring from every angle with dimensions. You ask for changes here, where they cost nothing.
- Casting. The approved model is printed in resin or wax and cast in metal.
- Setting and finishing. Stones are set, the ring is polished, and any engraving is added.
- Hallmarking, checks and delivery. Gold is hallmarked, the ring is checked against the approved render, and it is shipped insured or collected.
The full sequence, including printing and casting, is explained in our guide to how custom jewellery is made.
How to brief a maker when the ring is a surprise
A surprise ring needs three pieces of information you must collect quietly: her ring size, her taste in metal, and how she uses her hands. Get these right and the rest is the maker's job.
- Size. Borrow a ring she wears on the ring finger of the hand she will wear it on, and measure the inside diameter in millimetres. Indian size charts differ slightly between jewellers, so the millimetre figure is what you should send. A ring from another finger will mislead you.
- Metal colour. Look at the jewellery she wears daily, not what she wears to weddings. Mostly white metal, mostly yellow, or a mix tells you more than any guess.
- Hands and work. Someone who types all day, cooks, lifts or works in a lab needs a lower setting than someone who rarely uses her hands hard. A raised solitaire catches on gloves and fabric.
- Existing pieces. If she has a family ring she loves, photograph it. Its proportions tell the maker more than a description.
- The ceremony. In many Indian families both partners exchange rings at the ring ceremony. Decide early whether the two rings should match in metal or share a detail.
If you cannot learn the size, choose a design that can be resized, such as a solitaire on a plain shank, and avoid full eternity bands, which are hard or impossible to resize.
How much does a custom engagement ring cost in India?
A custom engagement ring costs the sum of its stones, metal, labour and design, plus 3% GST, and the centre stone usually takes the largest share. There is no reliable "average", because a lab-grown centre stone and a natural one of the same size are priced in different worlds.
Every figure below is for real diamonds, natural or lab-grown. A "custom" ring set with American diamond (cubic zirconia) or moissanite costs far less because the stone is a different material, so check the invoice names the stone before comparing quotes.
| Part of the price | How it is worked out | What moves it most |
|---|---|---|
| Centre stone | Price per carat, by origin and grade | Natural vs lab-grown, carat weight, colour, clarity, cut |
| Side and accent stones | Per stone or per total carat | Halo, pavé shoulders, number of stones |
| Metal | Grams times the day's rate for that metal and purity | 14K vs 18K gold, platinum or silver; band width and thickness |
| Making and setting | Labour for casting, setting, polishing, engraving | Many small set stones, hand engraving, intricate galleries |
| Design | CAD modelling and revisions, sometimes included | Complex shapes, many rounds of changes |
| GST | 3% of the full value of the finished ring | Applies to the whole bill, making included |
The 3% rate for jewellery of precious metal, plain or set with stones, is listed under heading 7113 in Schedule IV of CBIC's GST rate notification, in force since 22 September 2025.
At the time of writing, online custom makers we checked started their lab-grown diamond solitaires in 14K gold at around ₹45,000 to ₹50,000. A natural centre stone of the same size moves the ring into a different bracket, because natural diamonds cost several times more per carat. Our article on how much an engagement ring should cost in India covers budgeting and what to give up first.
Is custom more expensive than buying ready-made?
Not by default. Metal, stones and tax cost the same whichever route you take. A custom ring adds design time, while a showroom ring carries stock, display and margin costs. Where custom often wins is the stone: you choose the exact grade, so you are not paying for a colour or clarity you cannot see.
How long does a custom engagement ring take?
Allow two to eight weeks after design approval: lead times quoted by makers run from about two to four weeks for a simple solitaire to six to eight weeks for complex work, and most Indian makers publish no fixed figure, so get yours in writing. The design stage comes first and is in your hands: how quickly you reply to sketches and renders sets the real start date.
Work back from the proposal or ring ceremony date:
| Weeks before the date | What should be done |
|---|---|
| 8 to 6 weeks | Brief the maker, choose the centre stone, receive the first sketch |
| 6 to 5 weeks | Approve the CAD render and confirm the size |
| 5 to 1 weeks | Casting, setting, finishing and hallmarking |
| 1 week | Ring delivered or collected, checked against the render |
Leave more margin in the wedding season, for a natural stone that has to be sourced, or for a design with dense pavé. Ask for a date only after the design is signed off and the stone is in hand.
Does Tanishq do custom rings?
Tanishq's blog publishes ideas for customising rings, such as changing the prong count, adding or removing side stones and engraving, but at the time of writing we found no published process, timeline or price for custom engagement rings on its website. CaratLane, also part of Titan, says customers can design their own solitaire jewellery by choosing the metal, diamond quality, size and setting from its range of loose solitaires.
Chain showrooms are a sound choice when you want a known design adjusted and value a network of stores for servicing. If you want a ring designed from scratch, ask the store directly whether it creates new designs in CAD or modifies existing ones, and how many rounds of changes are included.
Custom engagement rings for men
A groom's custom ring is briefed the same way, but width, profile and stone height matter more than the centre stone. A groom's engagement ring in India is usually a band, often with a row of diamonds set flush or in a channel so nothing catches. For a matched pair, brief both rings together so the metal colour and stone choice agree.
What to get in writing before you pay
Every term that affects money or time should be on paper before casting. A good maker answers all of these without hesitation.
- The approved CAD render, with band width and stone sizes in millimetres.
- The metal and purity, the estimated finished weight in grams, and whether the gold rate is fixed at order or at delivery.
- The centre stone's origin (natural or laboratory-grown), carat weight and grade, and its report number if it has one.
- A BIS hallmark with a six-digit HUID for gold, which you can verify in the BIS Care app, as BIS explains on its consumer protection page.
- Whether a deposit is needed, how much, and what is refundable if you stop after the design stage.
- Whether the finished ring is returnable. Most custom rings are not.
- Resizing limits and what after-sales servicing covers.
How AXIOM approaches this
AXIOM makes engagement rings for any wearer as bespoke commissions from the Bharat Diamond Bourse in Mumbai. The design starts from the occasion rather than a catalogue, the stones are real diamonds, chosen with you as natural or lab-grown, and the ring is made in sterling silver or in 14K or 18K gold. There is no deposit to begin, consultations are virtual or in person, and a ring takes about three weeks to make plus delivery, so allow that before a fixed date and confirm timing through our contact page.
The practical takeaway
Decide the centre stone first, because it sets most of the budget, then find the size and brief the maker with photos. Approve nothing until you have seen a CAD render with millimetre dimensions, and get the metal, weight, stone details, hallmark and refund terms in writing. Start at least eight weeks before the date you have in mind.
