Custom Ring in Mumbai: How to Commission One and What It Costs
The short answer

To get a custom ring made in Mumbai, choose a maker (a Zaveri Bazaar jeweller, a chain showroom's custom desk or an independent atelier near the Bharat Diamond Bourse in BKC), brief them on size, width, profile and stones, and approve a CAD render before casting. Cost follows metal weight, stones and labour, not the postcode.

Mumbai is one of the easiest cities in India to have a ring made. The Bharat Diamond Bourse, which counts over 4,000 members, is here, and the city has everything from century-old family jewellers in south Mumbai to small studios that design in CAD and cast to order. The hard part is not finding a maker. It is choosing the right kind of maker for a man's ring, and briefing them so the ring comes back the way you pictured it.

Where to get a custom ring made in Mumbai

Mumbai's jewellery trade clusters in a few places, and each suits a different buyer. None is better in general; the right choice depends on the ring, your budget and how much design help you want.

  • Zaveri Bazaar and the lanes around Kalbadevi. South Mumbai's historic jewellery market, near Crawford Market and the Mumbadevi temple. Hundreds of shops, both wholesale and retail, with a strong tradition in gold. Best if you know exactly what you want and are comfortable comparing several shops.
  • Opera House and Prasad Chambers. The older home of Mumbai's diamond trade in south Mumbai, before much of it moved to the Bharat Diamond Bourse. The firms here deal mostly with the trade rather than the public.
  • BKC and the Bharat Diamond Bourse. A secure trade complex in Bandra Kurla Complex where thousands of diamond firms work. It is not a retail market, but some jewellers based there take private commissions by appointment. Our guide to the Bharat Diamond Bourse explains how it works.
  • Chain showrooms. National and regional brands with branches across the city. Many offer a custom or personalisation service built on their existing designs.
  • Independent studios and online-first makers. Smaller houses that design from scratch, often with virtual consultations and CAD renders sent over email or WhatsApp.

Which route suits which ring

Route Strengths Watch-outs
Market jeweller (Zaveri Bazaar) Wide choice, gold expertise, quick for traditional designs Design help varies; compare quotes carefully and insist on an itemised invoice
Chain showroom custom desk Standard processes, many branches, clear policies Often modifies existing designs rather than designing from scratch
Independent atelier or studio Design from a blank page, CAD renders, direct contact with the maker Usually by appointment; check hallmarking and after-sales in writing
Online-first maker Works remotely, easy to share references You judge scale from renders, so ask for millimetre dimensions and weight

How to brief a jeweller for a man's ring

A ring brief needs five decisions. Get these right and the maker can quote accurately and design quickly.

  1. Finger size. The most reliable method is to measure the inside diameter of a ring that already fits, flat and edge to edge, in millimetres. If you are between sizes, size up or ask the maker. Width matters here too: a wide band feels tighter than a narrow one of the same size.
  2. Width. Measured in millimetres. Try on bands of two or three widths if you can; the difference between them on a man's hand is larger than it looks on a screen.
  3. Profile. Flat, domed, comfort-fit (rounded on the inside), or bevelled at the edges. Comfort-fit is easier to wear all day and slides over the knuckle more easily.
  4. Stones. Type (natural or lab-grown, white or black diamond, coloured stone), number, size and setting. Flush and channel settings sit low and suit daily wear; raised prongs catch.
  5. Engraving. Inside the band for a private date or initials, outside for a decorative pattern. Inside engraving is protected from wear.

Tell the maker how he uses his hands. A man who lifts weights, works with tools or plays cricket needs a thicker band and low settings; a man who wears a ring only at weekends can carry a more delicate design.

What does a custom ring cost in Mumbai?

A custom ring costs what its parts cost, and Mumbai prices follow the same method as anywhere in India. There is no reliable "average" to quote, because metal, stones and labour each move on their own.

Part of the price How it is worked out What changes it
Metal Grams of metal times the day's rate for that metal and purity Width, thickness, profile, and whether it is silver or gold
Stones Per stone or per carat, by type and grade Number, size, colour and clarity, natural or lab-grown
Labour Casting, setting, polishing, engraving Many small set stones, hand engraving, textured finishes
Design CAD modelling and revisions Complex designs, many rounds of changes

Two pointers keep quotes comparable. Ask every maker for the estimated finished weight in grams and the stone details in writing, so you are comparing like with like. And ask whether the quote includes hallmarking, certification and GST, which some quotes leave out.

How long does a custom ring take?

The time depends on approvals and stones more than on the bench. A maker can cast and finish a plain band quickly once the design is fixed; the wait is usually for you to approve the render, or for the right stones to be found.

These stages are where time goes:

  1. Briefing and sketches, until a direction is chosen.
  2. CAD modelling and revisions, until you sign off.
  3. Stone sourcing, if the stones are not already in stock.
  4. Casting, setting and finishing.
  5. Hallmarking, final checks and delivery.

Revisions, matched stones and dense pavé setting lengthen the process. Wedding season does too. Ask for a date only after sign-off, and leave a margin before a proposal or a wedding.

The full sequence is explained in our guide to how custom jewellery is made.

Should you bring your own gold or stones?

You can, and many Mumbai jewellers will work with a customer's own metal or stones, but it changes the paperwork more than the price. Old gold is usually tested and weighed, and its value is set against the new ring; the jeweller may refine it or exchange it for fresh metal of the purity you want. Loose diamonds from a family piece can be reset, though the setter should check them for chips first.

Bringing your own What to ask Why it matters
Old gold How it will be tested, what purity it is credited at, and what is deducted The credit depends on tested purity, not the weight alone
Loose diamonds Whether they will be checked for damage before setting Old stones can hide chips that open under setting pressure
An heirloom ring Whether it will be reworked or melted, and whether the original can be kept Once melted, the original is gone

Ask for the weight of anything you hand over to be written on a receipt, and for the stones to be photographed. It takes a minute and settles any question later.

Questions to ask any ring maker before you pay

These questions protect you whichever route you choose. A good maker answers them without hesitation.

  1. Will I see and approve a CAD render before casting, and how many revisions are included?
  2. What will the finished ring weigh, and what metal and purity is it?
  3. Will a gold ring carry a BIS hallmark with a six-digit HUID? (You can verify an HUID in the BIS Care app, as the BIS consumer protection page explains.)
  4. Are the diamonds natural or lab-grown, and is a grading report included or available?
  5. Is a deposit needed, when, and what happens if I stop after the CAD stage?
  6. Can this design be resized later, and what does after-sales servicing cover?
  7. Is shipping or collection insured until the ring is in my hands?

How AXIOM makes custom rings in Mumbai

AXIOM works from the Bharat Diamond Bourse, BKC, Mumbai, where the team spent more than 15 years as a bench making for other names before AXIOM became a brand. A commission starts with the occasion rather than a design, moves through sketches and CAD until you sign off, and is cast, set and certified by hand at the Bourse. There is no deposit to begin, consultations are virtual or in person at the Mumbai atelier, and every piece carries a lifetime craftsmanship guarantee, with free servicing, resizing and refinishing. Start on the bespoke commissions page or through the contact page, or browse the men's rings and bands for reference.

The practical takeaway

Choose the maker by the kind of help you need, not by the neighbourhood. If you have a clear design, a market jeweller can make it; if you are starting from an idea, choose a studio that works in CAD and lets you revise. Either way, get the weight, metal, stones and hallmark in writing before you pay.

Questions people ask

How much does a custom ring cost in Mumbai?

There is no fixed price. A custom ring is priced as metal weight times the day's metal rate, plus stones, plus labour for casting, setting and finishing, plus any design fee. The same design costs far less in 925 sterling silver than in 18K gold. Ask for an itemised quote after the CAD stage.

How long does a custom ring take to make?

Most of the time goes on design approval and stone sourcing, not bench work. A plain band with a quick sign-off moves fastest; a ring with many set stones or matched diamonds takes longer. Ask for a firm date only once the CAD is approved and the stones are in hand.

Do Mumbai jewellers ask for a deposit on custom rings?

Many do, often before casting, because a ring made to your size and design is hard to resell. Practice varies from maker to maker. Ask what the deposit covers, when it is due, and whether you can stop after the CAD stage without paying for metal.

Can I ask for changes after seeing the design?

Yes, at the sketch and CAD stages, and you should. Changes to a render are quick and cheap. Once the ring is cast, changes usually mean recasting, which costs metal and time, so ask for every revision before you sign off.

Can a custom ring be resized later?

Most plain and partly set bands can be resized by a size or two. Full eternity bands, rings set with stones all the way round, and some tension or channel designs are hard or impossible to resize. Ask the maker before sign-off and choose the design with that in mind.
